Michigan Primary on August 6 and General Election on November 5: Exercise Your Right to Vote

As we approach the critical dates of August 6 for the Michigan primary and November 5 for the General Election, it’s essential to emphasize the importance of exercising your right to vote. These elections are not just another cycle in the political calendar; they are pivotal moments that shape the future of our state and country.

This year, every seat in the House of Representatives is up for re-election, which means 435 representatives will be vying for your vote. Additionally, 33 Senate seats are on the line, making this a crucial opportunity to influence the legislative direction of our nation. Let’s not forget the presidential election, featuring two candidates who have stirred significant debate and, frankly, are not winning any popularity contests. Despite personal feelings toward the candidates, the power of your vote remains as vital as ever.

Voting is more than a civic duty; it is a fundamental right that countless individuals have fought tirelessly to protect and expand. It is the cornerstone of our democracy, allowing us to have a say in who represents us and how our government operates. When you vote, you are making your voice heard on the issues that matter most to you, whether it’s healthcare, education, economic policy, social justice, climate or any combination of thereof.

In the primaries, your vote helps determine which candidates will represent your party in the general election. We do have a two party system, afterall. If we want to change that, we must change who represents us in Congress. It’s your chance to support those who align most closely with your values and priorities of democracy and freedom for all. In the general election, your vote contributes to deciding who will lead our country and shape our laws for the next several years, perhaps decades.

It’s easy to feel disillusioned, especially when faced with unpopular choices, but abstaining from voting only allows others to make decisions on your behalf. Instead, let’s take this opportunity to educate ourselves on the candidates and the issues, engage in meaningful discussions and cast informed votes.

Mark your calendars for August 6 and November 5. Encourage your friends, family, and colleagues to register and vote. Every vote counts, and together, we can shape the future we want to see. Remember, democracy thrives when everyone participates. Your voice matters – make sure it’s heard. And something extra special with Michigan is that we have nine days of early voting, helping to ensure that we can get as many Michiganders to the polls as possible.

As we stand on the brink of losing our democracy, it’s more important than ever to combat rampant misinformation and disinformation. We must uphold the values and priorities of a free country for all citizens who bring no harm to others. This fight is about ensuring that truth, justice and equality remain at the core of our society. Our votes are the most powerful tools we have in defending these principles. Let’s use them wisely and resolutely to safeguard the future of our democracy.

Over the next several months, we will feature candidates from across the state who are running for local, state and national seats. Remember the adage: politics begins at the local level. We will provide comprehensive information on the voting records of current officeholders seeking re-election. Additionally, we will offer podcasts, articles and select public forums with candidates from various levels, including local school boards, state representatives, Senate, and Congressional races. Our goal is to be a valuable resource, helping you make informed decisions by presenting their platforms and records clearly and concisely. Together, we can navigate this election season and ensure that every vote contributes to a brighter future for Michigan.
